Review: SIR DONKEY’S REVENGE – CHILDREN ON TREES

Genre: Rap-Rock / „Psychedelic Crossover from the Swiss Alps“ (this is how Sir Donkey‘s Revenge describe their music)

It‘s the third album by the rap-rock four-piece straight outta Engelberg. In a nutshell: Groove and power with attitude without killing any positive vibe. When you are listening to „Children on Trees“ you notice instantly that the guys from Sir Donkey‘s Revenge are just down for making music and are still hungry after four releases by now.

The chorus in „The Quest“ starting at 01:18 min. is epic as fuck. „Stain of Colour“ unites perfectly their sense for pathos, mystery and energy which stands for their sound and lyrics. In „Three Ugly Sisters“ wherein Theodor Fontane‘s „Die Brück am Tay“ gets adapted, the outfit‘s attraction to poetry and room for interpretation becomes clear at the latest. This high affinity for mystery and opacity is not only present in rapper Toni‘s lyrics („The shame disappears at the crack of dawn“ taken from „Ghost“), but also within the spherical walls of sound Remo (Guitar) produces on the record. Drummer Dave nails his drum parts on that album and proves his talent of adding tightness and focussing the energy. Gabriel, by now the third bass player in Sir Donkey‘s Revenge, is doing a great job. He plays exciting bass lines that serve the song and are anything but annoying: It‘s that extra something that‘s being added to the songs.

The purple-colored cover shows that psychedelic kinda thing the band would like to represent, however it‘s not on point. But that‘s a matter of argument. Anyway, this record has got soundwise and musically many moments of pure pleasure. Release date: 28.05.2021 (DMB Records).

Das mittlerweile dritte Album des Rap-Rock-Quartetts aus den Alpen groovt und drückt ordentlich mit einer gehörigen Portion „attitude“, verliert dabei aber nie den positiven Vibe. Man merkt beim Hören von „Children on Trees“, dass die Jungs von Sir Donkey‘s Revenge einfach Bock haben und nach sage und schreibe vier Releases noch lange nicht satt sind.

Die Hook, die im Song „The Quest“ bei Minute 01:18 zum ersten Mal einsetzt, ist „epic as fuck“. „Stain of Colour“ bringt den Mix aus Pathos, Mysterium und Energie, welcher für den Sound und die Texte der Band steht, optimal zur Geltung. Spätestens in „Three Ugly Sisters“, worin Theodor Fontanes „Die Brück‘ am Tay“ rezipiert wird, wird die Affinität zu Poesie mit Interpretationsspielraum deutlich. Dies schlägt sich nieder sowohl in den Texten von Rapper Toni („The shame disappears at the crack of dawn“ aus „Ghost“) als auch in den sphärischen Sound-Wänden, die Gitarrist Remo auf dem Album produziert. Ergänzt und tight zusammengehalten wird das Ganze von Drummer Dave. Gabriel, der mittlerweile dritte Bassist in der Laufbahn von Sir Donkey‘s Revenge, macht seine Sache „Eins A“. Er spielt spannende, songdienliche Bassläufe, die nicht nerven. Ganz im Gegenteil: Das Bassspiel verpasst den Songs die gewisse Würze.

Das lila-farbene Artwork zeigt zwar den „Psychedelic“-Touch, den die Band selbst verkörpern möchte, nur ganz auf den Punkt  gebracht ist es nicht. Aber über Plattencover lässt sich bekanntlich eher streiten als über die Musik an sich. Soundtechnisch und musikalisch jedenfalls ist die Platte ein Genuss. Schönes Ding!
